Oooh, what a sharp reminder of how tragic the situation was in The Shrine--but so much better with your coda!

They catch each other's eye and laugh at how ridiculous they are.
"Took ya long enough," Rodney says, squeezing John's hand again. "But we're here now."

~ si-ii-ighh ~ ^^ That ^^ is the cure for all the sniffles caused earlier. The ficlet could end there, for me. ;-)
(And as I commented to [livejournal.com profile] sgamadison above, of course John excels at stealth hand-holding. He learned it in Colonel School. :-D )

I must admit that as much as I love McSheppy interpretations of The Shrine & as ridiculous & wanky as I found the McKeller storyline, part of me wants to celebrate The Shrine as a depiction of "just" friendship between Rodney & John. I've been fortunate to love a couple of Friends who were in the center of my heart, as dear as family or lovers & just as important in my life. American culture & many individuals don't believe in friendships that deep these days, especially between men, so showing it without apology on TV would be as radical to Americans as showing a couple of men in love. In a situation as emotionally charged & frightening as losing ones faculties/dealing with a loved ones irreversible decline & death, it would subvert mainstream ideas & values to claim that friendship is as worthy to be a goal & reason for ones life as a romantic relationship.
'Sides, I think John & Rodney would enjoy being subversive & quietly challenging a narrow-minded status quo. ;-)
