I know that at least someone that worked on the show had the same feeling as you. Why? Because there are little things here and there that celebrate John and Rodney's friendship on a level that most shows wouldn't approach. Their scene on the pier in The Shrine. The scene where Rodney collapses on the bed in The Tao of Rodney - where if you catch it just right, you can see a tear fall from John to the bed where Rodney lays. I think some of it is the actors themselves, but I think there's a touch of something else, too. It pushes the envelope of what we are used to as a Western society.
