Rodney didn't get to college/university but he gets to Atlantis somehow, once there he keeps trying to get the ATA gene and work with the scientists but because he's not educated they wont let him at first. He and John just miss each other in various areas until there are emergencies then John notices how good he is and they both realise how good they feel in each others company.
